Episode 3 - Bike City

Imagine a transportation system so efficient, that it can run on what you ate for breakfast. A human on a bike is one of the most energy efficient modes of movement in the animal kingdom in terms of calories burned for distance traveled. Bike City captures the growing movement to make Cleveland a place safe for people who prefer “pedal power” - transportation propelled by feet.

Building on Freeway City, Bike City looks at the effort to reduce the dominance of the automobile in urban space- challenging the post World War II shift to a transit system that privileges the private automobile above all else.

Bike City reveals a growing community of Clevelanders using the bicycle as a means of transportation, recreation, socializing and commuting. Clevelanders from all walks of life and backgrounds are unifying around the simple act of pedaling

As city streets become safer for the bicycle, it will have the additional effect of making neighborhoods more safe, connected, and livable.

But is Cleveland a Bike City? Transit by bike reduces our carbon footprint, makes us healthier, and allows us to feel more connected to our neighborhoods. But is it a safe choice given the preference given to automobiles jetting through our urban streets? Watch Bike City and find out!
